Ever fantasize about what you’d do for a living if your bank account was magically full forever? Most of us have. It’s a fun thought experiment that reveals what we truly value beyond the daily grind. The jobs we’d choose in a world without financial worries aren’t just about fun; they’re about purpose, connection, and following our deepest curiosities.
I’ve spent some time daydreaming about this very topic, and here are three jobs I’d pursue if money were no object.
1. Global Explorer & Local Adventurer
Forget a two-week vacation—I’d want a full-time job as a world traveler with my family. We’d pack our bags and go wherever the wind, or a family vote, took us. Imagine exploring the bustling markets of Morocco, hiking the ancient ruins of Peru, or simply soaking in the beauty of a quiet beach in Thailand.
But a true explorer knows you don’t have to cross oceans to find remarkable places. A huge part of this dream job would be a massive road trip, or two, or three, around our own backyard here in Australia. From the stunning red dirt of the Outback to the vibrant blues of the Great Barrier Reef, our country has some of the most beautiful and unique landscapes on Earth. It would be a journey of discovery, finding hidden gems and reconnecting with the land we call home.
2. A Pillar of the Community
This one is less of a job and more of a calling. In a world without financial constraints, I would dedicate my time to supporting my local community’s less fortunate. I already do this when I can, but to be able to do it without worrying about my own finances would be incredible.
The work would involve providing food, shelter, and a helping hand to those struggling with addiction and other challenges. It’s about more than just giving; it’s about being a consistent, reliable source of support. It’s a job that would fill my days with purpose and my heart with the reward of seeing people get back on their feet and reclaim their lives.
3. A Professional Hobbyist
The third “job” is less about a single role and more about an ever-changing list of creative pursuits. We all have those random hobbies that pop into our heads—the ones we wish we had the time and money to pursue. If money didn’t matter, my job would be to follow every single one of those fleeting ideas.
One day, I’d finally sit down and learn to play the guitar. Another, I’d grab a magnet and try my hand at magnet fishing, pulling who-knows-what treasures from a local creek. There’s also the dream of starting a YouTube channel to document our family’s camping and fishing adventures.
And let’s not forget the appeal of a metal detector. I’d love to spend a day wandering our incredible beaches, not so much to find a pirate’s chest, but more for the thrill of the hunt. I’m sure I’d end up with a few thousand bottle caps and some lost fishing hooks, but that’s half the fun, isn’t it? The true treasure is the experience itself.
This little thought exercise shows that the work we truly want to do isn’t always about a title or a salary. It’s about making memories with family, helping others, and finding joy in the small, quirky adventures of life.
